Biography:
A runaway from university, Jaki Sainsbury bought a one way ticket to Zanzibar and hasn't looked back. She majored in professional and creative journalism at Deakin University, freelanced in Melbourne's music press scene writing for Beat Broker, and dabbled in PR before editing the widely circulated Swahili Coast Magazine, Tanzania. A chance meeting with Rachel Hamada changed her itinerary and she's been working on Mambo magazine since its creation. Her travels include East Africa, Australia and Japan.
Jaki has now left Mambo but we will always remember her as one of the founders of the magazine.
What I love about Zanzibar:
There's no better thing to wake up to than the the African coffee brewing in Jaws Corner, Stone Town. The baraza is always full of locals and the rich sounds of Swahili life. 'Jaws Corner' (named for the Swahili's love of the movie Jaws) symbolizes the best things about Zanzibari culture: its hospitality and sense of humor.
