Voluteer opportunities in Bwejuu, Zanzibar
Hi, I'm a teacher/writer/traveller and my husband, John, is professor/film-maker/physicist. We are currently living in the USA, but we have a small piece of land in Bwejuu on Zanzibar's beautiful east coast, where we are slowly but surely, (probably a few years till completion to be honest!), working to build volunteer housing for people who would love to lend their skills to the welcoming village people, especially children, of Bwejuu. Meantime, volunteers can stay at wonderful (and reasonably priced, especially for volunteers) places like Mustapha's Place.
John and I brought a number of used computers to the village in 2010 (40 all up) so if you have any computer skills, the villagers would be needing your help with that, English teachers, of course, are always welcome; crafts experts; nurses etc etc Contact us for more information about how you could help the people of Bwejuu. sbrownsdon [at] yahoo [dot] com. (By the way, John and I are not charging anything and we are now based in the USA, but for now we can give advice and if you are self directed, with the local people's ready help, assistance from Mambo contributors, you will do just fine :-)
By the way, one thing John and I noted the government school in Bwejuu really needs is science equipment. The science teacher showed me her few test tubes, and although there was space when we were there last for a science room, lack of funding meant the work had stopped, at least at that time...well, it had never started to be honest, but we were shown the space. With not enough desks and holes in the roof, lack of basic other equipment etc there were other priorities. Lots to think about. Helping any way you can, even if you are just there on holiday, will give you a great sense of involvement. To be honest, I think perhaps it's hard to be on holiday in Africa and not try to contribute in some way, in fact, but of course, I'm biased because our whole computer project just made John and I feel SO great and we'd never done anything quite like that before. We were living in Oman before, so it was easier to get to Zanzibar, but for now we are saving up our pennies to return as soon as we can!!
