Zanzibari born photographer R Abdulrehman portrays a Stone Town of contemplation and silence - still lives, night-time scenes captured at a moment of calm and everyday moments of prayer and reflection.
R Abdulrehman is a Winnipeg-based poet and artist. His photographic works have been shot internationally, including such locations as Barcelona, Granada, Paris, London, Istanbul, Mecca, Selkirk, Winnipeg, Dar Es Salaam, and his city of origin, Stone Town, Zanzibar.
Abdulrehman works in the medium of both film and digital photography. His photographic works have been recipients of awards. Abdulrehman’s poetry has been published in literary supplements and arts magazines, much of which is published under his pen name, Raymond Marias. Abdulrehman is also Humantree’s creative director.
Humantree is a not-for-profit organisation involved with the promotion and sale of art of both established and up-and-coming artists. Working with contributing artists who generously donate their work, Humantree donates 100% of the profits from these sales to the aid of underprivileged children, their families, and orphans around the world.
At present Humantree is donating proceeds to the United Nations affiliated charity, Small Kindness. Small Kindness is a global charity founded by Yusuf Islam (the artist formerly known as Cat Stevens), and has received numerous awards for work with impoverished populations. Their work has helped orphans and families overcome poverty, and the affliction of both natural disasters and war.
Furthermore, Small Kindness has been heavily involved in development of education of boys, girls, and young women to promote self-sufficiency. Small Kindness has ongoing and established charitable projects in Darfur, the Balkans, Iraq, Kashmir, and Indonesia.
