Stone Town vignettes
Over a year ago now, a fine art photo gallery was opened in the centre of Stone Town at the site of a former tourist shop. The idea to start The Beautiful Eyes as a venue to present art photography started in May 2008, when three photographers visited Zanzibar for a week of photography. They saw a need for a place to talk, present and even to buy photography.
In September 2008, Hans Agterdenbos, one of the three, came back to Stone Town and started investigations for a gallery. He met Zanzibari Zakia Abdullah and they married in March 2009. Then they opened the gallery on the site of Zakia's former shop at Hurumzi 223, in the heart of the old town.
The Beautiful Eyes sells prints, printed on non acid cotton rig paper from museum quality and printed on the state of the art printer and ink so that they are collectors item for at least 100 years. The gallery also sells original postcards, and offers a 'photowalk', where visitors can go on a photographic adventure in the alleyways of this World Heritage site.
