The waswahili live in the uswahiliini, which in daily talk refers to the poor areas of Dar es Salaam. Directly translated it means ‘Haven of Peace’, however, the inhabitants call it Bongo, deriving from the word ubongo which means brain. Supposedly you need that to make it in the streets of Dar es Salaam – a rather inquisitive nickname demarcating a fine line between love and despair.
