Village lives
Documentary photographs of the coastal villages of Paje and Matemwe were taken by professional photographer Carlotta Maitland Smith.
Carlotta Maitland Smith is a freelance photographer based in Europe, specialising in documentary and environmental portraiture. She studied photography at both SPEOS (Paris International Photographic Institute) and ICP (International Centre of Photography in New York), and has a joint-honours degree in languages from UCL (University College London).
With a quenchless curiosity to learn about people from other backgrounds and walks of life, Carlotta has travelled extensively, photographing several communities around the world, from Aboriginal communities in Australia, the Bakonzo Tribe of the Mountains of the Moon in Uganda, the Himba, Herero and San Bushmen of Namibia to an Italian American community in the Bronx of New York.
