Kiwengwa
Found on the exquisite 'coconut coast' of Zanzibar's northeast, Kiwengwa is the essential beach village for any traveller looking for sun, sand and sea. Between the palm jungle behind the beach and the Indian Ocean, Kiwengwa offers a Zanzibar experience with all the comforts from back home. It's a package holiday paradise; hotels are big, nightlife is plentiful, during high season the beach can often feel like a festival. It's a good launching place to see the Mnemba atoll and there are quite a few wild monkeys around if you don't mind losing some of your breakfast.
The lesser known Kiwengwa-Pongwe Forest Reserve should not be missed. Inside lie the deep caves abounding in local legends and superstition, indigenous forest and wild red colobus monkeys that are far less used to visitors than the tame troupes of Jozani Forest. Kiwengwa is the ideal destination; a tropical cocktail of coconut palms and sun with pristine coast to play on.
