Pongwe
The small village of Pongwe is in one of Zanzibar's sleepiest corners (and this isn't an island noticed for teeming metropolises...) It only has a handful of low-key, relaxed accommodation options - but they cover a range of prices from budget to some high-end places due to open soon. A stunning, wide white beach is the star attraction for most visitors, and its the kind of beach that lends itself perfectly to days of relaxed romance and beachcoming. It's a real paradise for honeymooners who want seclusion and time together in an idyllic setting.
With the village of Uroa down the road, with some more package-style resorts, although still relatively unspoilt, and Kiwengwa to the north, with some of the island's largest Italian resorts, Pongwe seems to have a charmed existence and has retained a real desert island feel. Fresh seafood abounds, snorkelling and watersports are on offer and the local village has been relatively unaffected by tourism and people remain friendly and welcoming.
