Fumba
Tucked away just 20km from Stone Town, Fumba boasts one of the best access points to the smaller islands on the western coast of Zanzibar. Travellers here can enjoy the ease of Zanzibar beach life close to historic Stone Town, or just hide away and enjoy the shores of Kiwani bay.
Fumba is the gateway to the Menai Bay conservation area and its atolls. Within the 4,700 hectares you’ll find some of the most scenic dhow cruises, scuba, snorkelling trips to stunning reefs including Niamembe, Miwi, Pamunda, Pungume and Kwale islands. Fumba guests can travel to Uzi and Vundwe islands in the smaller Pete Inlet Bay. Menai is home to the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncates) and the humpbacked dolphin (Sousa chinensis) but at least six other species have also been identified here.
Guests can also take a look at the local pearl farming industry in Fumba. It's an ecologically responsible project, run totally by the village pearl harvesters themselves. Their distinctive saltwater half pearls (called 'Mabe' in Swahili) are stunning and are a great buy.
